ARTIST STATEMENT

As a landscape artist, I find my inspiration from the natural and sensual beauty of the island. I particularly enjoy painting during the changing seasons, as the delicate spring colors deepen into the lush green and yellow shades of summer, and then ripen into the earthy red tones of fall. Finally, there are the hush-quiet-scenes of winter, as the sea grows colder and wilder, and the palette of the land becomes more muted.

I love to use oils, both thick and thin, in order to reflect the exquisite light of the island. I often discover new places to paint during my walks with the dog in the early morning on the beaches and in the late afternoons in Menemsha. As I drive down island, I see the rolling hills of Chilmark and the splendid landscape vistas of farms and fields in West Tisbury and in Tisbury. I try to paint each day by both the early morning light and the late afternoon light. Up island, I seek to capture the beauty of the Gay Head cliffs, the battle between sun and fog over Windy Gates, and the tranquility of Chilmark Pond. Inspiration is fueled by the changing light and palate of land and sea throughout the different seasons, and I hope to go one exploring the island for many years to come.
